Did you know there is a name for the creek that runs through Unionville?
It is a tributary of the Walkill River that was once known by its Lenape name.
Here is a list I’ve compiled of the different spellings of the creek’s name:
Wokheakon Kill – 1753 in Journal of Richard Gardiner.
Wackhehon – 1761 Aug 18, Devises of Mary Alexander … “the county of Sussex lying on a West branch of the Walkill called Wackhehon”
Wohhakon – 1762 Kimber deed. (Wantage Recorder, March 2, 1928)
Wokkakon – Chinkchewunska Chapter, A. S. Decker Regent. Old Unionville Records, No. 3. On the 23rd utl., we printed excerpts from two old deeds in the possession of Mrs. Sarah Grover, of Unionville, for lands; one tract along a west branch of the wallkill called “Roey” or Red Kill, and the other along a west branch of the Walkill called “Wokkakon,” given by the New Jersey proprietors on Dec. 13th, 1762”
Wockhacon – 1764, Nov 10, Samuel Meeker buys 13 acres from Richard Gardiner. F-3 (EJ): Folio 350 (SSTSE023) “Lot and parcel of land on the West side of the Drowned Lands Joining a tract returned to the Devices of Mrs Alexander situated on a Branch of the Walkill called Wockhacon.”
Wockhakon – Wantage Recorder, Nov 26, 1926. (also in Wantage Recorder, February 16, 1912)

Wakakon – 1793 D131, Ebenezer Mead, Samuel Van Fleet, west branch of the walkill called Wakakon

Other names it has been called:
